Pete Blois is a Senior Program Manager Lead on the Expression Blend team. He's responsible for tooling for Silverlight, WPF, and now Silverlight for Windows Phone 7 Series.

Blend 4 supports not only Silverlight, WPF, and Windows Phone, it now includes multi-targeting support for the .NET framework 3.5sp1 and 4, Silverlight 3 and 4, and Silverlight for Windows Phone, just like Visual Studio 2010. In this video, Pete goes into some detail about how they have accomplished multi targeting in Blend 4.

Pete also talks about Rooler, the screen measurement and sampling tool he created for designers and developers. Written in WPF, this has become one of my go-to tools whenever I'm working with an existing design.

Finally, we get into the new Blend tooling for Windows Phone Series 7 development. As expected, the Expression team delivers with an awesome design and development experience for a new platform.

Pete Blois is a Senior Program Manager Lead on the Expression Blend team. He's responsible for tooling for Silverlight, WPF, and now Silverlight for Windows Phone 7 Series.

Blend 4 supports not only Silverlight, WPF and Windows Phone, but now includes multi-targeting support for the .NET framework 3.5sp1 and 4, and Silverlight 3 and 4, Silverlight for Windows Phone, just like Visual Studio 2010. Pete goes into some detail on how they have accomplished multi targeting in Blend 4.
</evnet:previewtext>

<media:group>

</media:group>

<trackback:ping>http://channel9.msdn.com/536908/Trackback.aspx</trackback:ping>

Bruger Test Automation med Visual Studio 2010

af Jakob Leander, Avanade.
Jeff talked about what it's like to work on RIA Services, sharing with the community, and openness at Microsoft. Jeff and I also talked about what it's like to come back to an office full of popcorn, as well as some tidbits regarding some RIA Services and validation changes coming up as RIA Services takes on INotifyDataErrorInfo vs. the old exception-based validation approach.
Henry Sowizral is a Principal Architect in Microsoft Expression, and he and his team did something really cool: they converted an existing C/C++/MFC application to have a WPF front-end, while still leveraging all that existing code.

If you have legacy code and are considering porting the UI to .NET, pick up some pointers from Henry.

Once you've finished, check out Henry's presentation deck on how the team converted the Expression Design UI to WPF.
If you have legacy code and are considering porting the UI to .NET, pick up some pointers from Henry.</evnet:previewtext>

<media:group>

</media:group>

<trackback:ping>http://channel9.msdn.com/536903/Trackback.aspx</trackback:ping>

MSDN Webcast: Migrating Your HPC Applications to the Windows Platform (Level 300)

The latest version of Windows HPC Server offers the signature advantages of a Windows operating system such as ease of use, advanced professional development tools, and unparalleled binary compatibility. However, the migration of applications to a Windows platform can be a learning experience for a typical high-performance computing (HPC) developer with a strong UNIX background. In this webcast, we discuss the anatomy of a typical HPC application and the general porting process. We explain how to use cross-platform development tools such as Cygwin, CMake, Subsystem for UNIX-based Applications (SUA), and the migration API reference guide. We also provide an update on the status of OSS solver and I/O libraries. Powerpoint Presentation

When working with an HPC cluster- including thousands of machines and many different hardware components and software packages- errors and failures are unavoidable. As a result, most HPC administrators spend a large majority of their time on diagnostics. Windows HPC Server 2008, the current version, offers 16 built-in system tests and a GUI and scripting interface to run tests, receive and clear alerts, view results and preserve result history. In the latest release, Windows HPC Server 2008 R2, this diagnostics platform is becoming extensible: administrators and partners can create custom diagnostic tests to run in the same way as the built-in tests. This allows cluster administrators to troubleshoot more easily the custom and non-Microsoft software or hardware added to their HPC cluster.

This session will cover:

- What you can do with the extensible diagnostics framework

- How to create a custom diagnostic test, add it to WPHC, run it and view results

- How to aggregate test results for a large scale cluster so that administrator can easily spot the outliers

- Ideas for tests to help validating or troubleshooting ISV apps

He stopped by the studio today to give us some tips as surfers, as well as a few tips for developers, on some of the things that can help prevent security threats. In 2008 a study showed that about 70% of attacks on web sites were from cross-site scripting. Pete goes through three security topics that every developer should know about. They include tips for cross-site scripting defenses, HTML sanitization, and JSON sanitization. Some of you may know him as the wizard who appears out of thin air whenever the word Monad is said three times in succession. :->

A few weeks ago, Erik Meijer sent an email to Brian with a link to some videos about the use of analog computers in the US Navy in the 1950s. This got Brian thinking and reflecting about his past. Turns out Brian's father was a famous Hollywood actor who also produced training movies for the US Navy. Well, I was added on to the email thread and we taped the conversation in this video a few days later.

It's always a pleasure to embark on an unscripted chat with Dr. Beckman. There are always great nuggets of wisdom and insight around every corner. Here, you'll learn about some of Brian's personal history, some insights on analog computing, and even some discussion on the Drake equation, N = N* fp ne fl fi fc fL, which attempts to formalize the probability of intelligent life in the universe.

Sit back, relax, and enjoy.

<evnet:views>21142</evnet:views><evnet:viewtrackingurl>http://channel9.msdn.com/534265/WebViewBug.aspx?EVT=0</evnet:viewtrackingurl><evnet:previewtext>
It's been far too long since we've chatted with the great Brian Beckman, an astrophysicist, software architect, and Channel 9 icon. Well, I was added on to the email thread and we taped the conversation in this video a few days later.
</evnet:previewtext>

<media:group>

</media:group>

<trackback:ping>http://channel9.msdn.com/534265/Trackback.aspx</trackback:ping>

How to Parallelize Your Application - Part 2 Theads v Tasks

In Part 2 of this series, ISV Architect Evangelist Bruce Kyle, explores the differences between Threads and System.Threading.Tasks in .NET 4.
