I kind of was assuming for a long while that final RTW versions of Visual Studio 2010, the .NET frame work 4.0, Silverlight 4, and a new version of Expression Blend were going to be released at MIX 2010. MIX is now over and I don't think this happened.

My question is then: Are there any pending release dates for any of the products I mentioned, and if so what are those dates?

It's my own effing phone... I should be able to:

Enough with designing everything for the lowest common denominator. The only real advantage that WP7 has over the iphone is that it has an API that doesn't suck (but you can still call native code from the iPhone so even this advantage is mitigated).

I guess I'll be sticking with Android for the forseeable future. I wish Microsoft had really done something different and not just made a carbon copy of Apple's business model. I watched Steve Ballmer on stage at MIX08 lampoon Apple's business model and that they were taking 30% of everything and now is creating an exact replica. Thanks, but no thanks, I'll stick to Android... And if i want to play in a walled garden, i'll go buy an iPhone.

The design environment looks great, Microsoft.

Unfortunately, for some developers control of the device and local data storage are really important. People using hardened devices like those from Symbol, Psion, etc. are really using more of handheld computer functionality than the phone. It's being used as a real business tool all day long that may or may not have phone functionality.

It would be nice to create better UI for the enterprise too, but it looks like these users are not as big a priority for Microsoft as the average phone user. I understand, it's a much larger market. I wonder though, how long there will be people making enterprise equipment for WindowsMobile 6 since there is no access to XAML based development.

I thought the WIndowsPhones was going to be a mobile computer with a phone, but as it stands its a phone with web access, since Silverlight it really a web technology(a browser plug-in). Running out of browser makes it more but unless there is local db storage and access to things like SD cards its too dependent on the server. Servers go down or slowdown, bandwidth is sometimes scarce/non-existent or too costly. Workers cannot stop working when the server is unavailable. There's still alot of lost productivity during peek times on wired desktop networks where the server might be in the building!

Personally, I think Silverlight on devices was not the correct choice if it precludes being able to store databases locally and even plugging in an SD card with huge amounts of database data and accessing it. It's a fatal flaw. I think there are many exciting and useful apps for the device that will not be written if anything more than trivial amounts of data need to come from a server. and not just enterprise apps. It hamstrings the platform in the middle of a mobile revolution. This will force app writers who need this functionaliy to move to other platforms that provide local database access including the IPhone, IPod Touch and IPad. I hope Microsoft remedies this quickly. (Yes, I am the type of guy who will point out "I told you so" when it hits the fan.)

I originally looked at the WIndows Embedded Compact Framework (unsure of the exact title) when it was announced around last November that it would support Silverlight. But, if I understand correctly, it is a C++ dev environment and may still suffer from a lack of local db access.

What's an Enterprise developer to do?

<evnet:views>138</evnet:views><evnet:viewtrackingurl>http://channel9.msdn.com/537722/WebViewBug.aspx?EVT=0</evnet:viewtrackingurl><evnet:previewtext>First of all, let me say I love that users can now create pretty UI using XAML. Not entirely sure what that mean actually. Anyway, isn't it funny to see how small the download and there is no install stage at all? If there is install stage, obviously it is too fast to notice. My monitor has got a strange black strip in the top right corner, blocking part of the display. It's been there for a while, at first obscuring at most one line of pixels. But slowly over several months, almost unnoticably, it's been getting larger. Now it's come to the point where you can actually see a couple of the corner pixels on the other side of the strip again.

It seems that something inside the monitor has come loose and is slowly dropping in front of the display. Any attempts to manipulate it by pushing on the display surface have failed. It's not possible to open the monitor casing, as far as I can tell.

The monitor is not under warranty anymore, so I'm looking at either replacing it or an expensive repair, unless any of you can think of something I might try to remedy this problem.

<evnet:views>78</evnet:views><evnet:viewtrackingurl>http://channel9.msdn.com/537693/WebViewBug.aspx?EVT=0</evnet:viewtrackingurl><evnet:previewtext>Ok, this is a fairly strange problem.
on the future of browser based UI development.

I remember having a discussion a while ago about wether we needed to "invent" xaml and why we could not just evolve HTML instead. Looks like we have a clear answer now thanks to the community who pushed for HTML5. What a waste of time and resources with all the investment in silverlight and xaml, if it is going to die eventually as it should! There was all this emphasis on GPU support and rich graphics that wa available via Silverlight. Looks like that is not the case any more with IE9.

Funny I though that this Mix conf was about highlighting silverlight4; now it looks like the silverlight funeral with all the announcements on HTML5 support; i see no sense in silverlight anymore , am I missing something?

I was just getting ready to invest time in Silverlight4 for browser UIs; maybe it seems much more sensible to invest in HTML5 + Javascript; Can we get some more intelligent comments to help clarify?

So far it seems to me that Javascript wins by a knockout with IE9 support!

<evnet:views>184</evnet:views><evnet:viewtrackingurl>http://channel9.msdn.com/537633/WebViewBug.aspx?EVT=0</evnet:viewtrackingurl><evnet:previewtext>I am starting this thread so that I can get some clarity from all the great developers on channel9

It doesn't really include much, so I know I probably shouldn't draw any conclusions from it, but I was interested in its language support, or rather lack thereof.

There is an option in the settings to change the UI language. That's good. Currently, English is the only option, but since there's an option there, I guess that the real thing (or the final version) will have more options.

There is however apparently no way to change input languages. No such setting appears to exist, and unlike e.g. the iPhone the keyboard itself doesn't have a key to cycle between the installed keyboards. For myself, the ability to type in different languages is very important. I need English, Dutch and Japanese. The only difference with Dutch would be the autocorrect dictionary, so it's doable without, but still inconvenient. But for Japanese, you need to have an alternate method (either a romaji or a kana keyboard, and preferably also handwriting recognition). The Windows Phone emulator can only enter text in English.

Worse, there's not even a Japanese font. If I go to a Japanese website, I get the familiar square boxes. Unlike with Windows Mobile 6 and before, you can't seem to install your own fonts, let alone create and install a custom Soft Input Panel.

This was a huge argument in favour of the iPhone when I needed a new phone last year. With an iPhone, even when I buy it in Japan, I can set the display language to English or Dutch or anything else I like. Yet even with English display language, I can still view and enter Japanese text anywhere, important for SMS, e-mail and the odd Japanese app (like Jorudan's train information app I use). With Windows Mobile devices, I'd've been stuck with Japanese, and flashing them with an English ROM would've lost Japanese input and font support.

I'd hoped that Windows Phone 7 Series would improve in this regard, but from the emulator, it doesn't appear to be the case. Again, I realize the emulator isn't final and not a real phone, so it might mean nothing. But I'm just curious, has anyone heard anything about how WP7S will handle multiple display and input languages?

<evnet:views>134</evnet:views><evnet:viewtrackingurl>http://channel9.msdn.com/537526/WebViewBug.aspx?EVT=0</evnet:viewtrackingurl><evnet:previewtext>I've briefly checked out the Windows Phone 7 emulator.

Is this the emulators fault? (its running on a 2 point multitouch tablet)

Is it my fault? (ie my multitouch code is dodgy - although it works just fine running the code on the tablet machine?).

PS My hope is that the emulator supports the same touch point supported by the host machine (up to 4 which I think the WP7 supports)

Scotts' keynote yesterday suggested that this was the case although he mentions an issue with drivers?

will IE9 include some new fonts?

..not even new - just at least the entire Segoe (UI, light etc) family.

I know it is in Vista and windows 7 and recent Offices - but it would be great to have some new web fonts...

*if you remember my take on this - buy corel - add 2000 fonts for the web - free. (installed default for windows users)

= Got windows? the web has 2000 fonts now! (not the 20 fonts we have had for the last 15 years) - with the ONLY new ones coming from Microsoft.

get back to your - we love fonts - web roots....

if not 2000 ... at LEAST segoe family... SOMETHING.... ANYTHING NEW!!!!

the end :p

EDIT: and if you are worried about windows (again) just make the web fonts (clean-roomed web fonts - like copeland did at corel) - not high quality enough to use for printing high res - but good enough to read on screen and print in laser / bubblejet document formats.

THEN - people still need office for high quality prinit fonts - but the web gets 2000 fonts - only in windows

and last WEFT .... or WTF? Move all that stuff out of browser and make regular "font face="whatever.ttf" call some invisible MS font DB - that ok's it

on mac? sorry. on linux? sorry. (id make them available to all - but thats me)

ie; "Today Microsft changes the web" "MS offers - 2000 fonts for web - hurray!" "MS leaps ahead on publishing - 2000 fonts for web" "Not your fathers Internet anymore: MS - 2000 web fonts"

*in other news: Google issues statement: "there's more than one font?" :)

will IE9 include some new fonts?

..not even new - just at least the entire Segoe (UI, light etc) family.
I know it is in Vista and windows 7 and recent Offices - but it would be great to have some new web fonts...
